Obesity Management

Obesity Management

Altered metabolism, Errors of nutrition, Physiological changes including Endocrinal disturbances and Psychological distress play a role in manifestation of Obesity, say the experts of Integrative medicine at Vivekananda Health Global.

Obesity is characterized by an excess accumulation of fat in the body due to energy intake exceeding energy expenditure. Long standing sedentary jobs and reduced physical activity are the well-known reasons for Obesity today.

BMI is the tool most commonly used to estimate and screen for overweight and obesity in adults and children. BMI is defined as weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared. For most people, BMI is related to the amount of fat in their bodies, which can raise the risk of many health problems.

Effects of Obesity

Obesity is increasing in epidemic proportions globally and is a predisposing factor for Hypertension, Diabetes, Early Osteoarthritis and many more. Its management in a holistic way is crucial and therefore integrating the modalities of Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy proves beneficial in obesity control.

The ancient Ayurvedic knowledge regarding Medoroga and Sthoulya can be considered to explain the current understanding of obesity. Herbs such as Katuki (Picrorhiza kurroa), Haridra (Curcuma longa), Guggulu (Commiphera mukul) etc have scrapping action on the excess accumulated fat.

Though there is lot to offer in the management of Obesity, cultivating preventive methodology by adapting the culture of right eating and living, will remain crucial. People should understand that dining out of home frequently not only increases the risk of metabolic problems, but also have less nutritive food with additives and preservatives. They can also have lower levels of HDL, the good cholesterol, and weighed more for their height. Restaurants routinely serve an overabundance of the things people should be cutting down on: calories, salt, sugar and fat. Therefore some regulation has to be brought into place to see that food providers offer quality food to bring in healthy society rather than serving ‘value meal’ with French fries, Soda and Burger.!!!
